U.S. Senate intelligence report backs joint assessment of 2016 Russian meddling – media

The committee review said interviews with those involved in drafting the assessment showed that “analysts were under no politically motivated pressure to reach specific conclusions.”

The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday released its review of a joint assessment issued by U.S. intelligence agencies of Russia’s coordinated campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election. In its heavily redacted 158-page report, the committee found that the Intelligence Community Assessment commissioned by former President Barack Obama in late 2016 “presents a coherent and well-constructed intelligence basis for the case of unprecedented Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.”

The report was unanimously approved by senators on the committee, CBS News wrote. “The ICA reflects strong tradecraft, sound analytical reasoning, and proper justification of disagreement in the one analytical line where it occurred,” Republican Senator Richard Burr, the committee chairman, said in a statement accompanying the report’s release. “The Committee found no reason to dispute the Intelligence Community’s conclusions.”

A declassified version of the ICA – which was compiled by the CIA, FBI, National Security Agency and Office of the Director of National Intelligence and is otherwise highly classified – was released publicly on January 6, 2017. The committee review said interviews with those involved in drafting the ICA showed that “analysts were under no politically motivated pressure to reach specific conclusions.”

The ICA’s principal finding, delivered with “high confidence,” was that Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered an influence campaign aimed at the 2016 election and designed to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral process. Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, in their own report on the matter, faulted the ICA for its judgment that Russia preferred Mr. Trump, saying agencies failed to employ “proper analytic tradecraft.”

The U.S. intelligence community has continuously warned that Moscow would again attempt to interfere in the 2020 presidential election, likely using more sophisticated tactics. The question of whether Russia would show support for a particular candidate has already proven politically divisive.

In February, Mr. Trump abruptly dismissed acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire after ODNI official Shelby Pierson told the House Intelligence Committee in a classified briefing that Russia had developed a “preference” for Mr. Trump in the 2020 election.

In a subsequent briefing to all members of Congress, administration officials said they had “nothing to support” the notion that Putin favored one candidate over another. Pierson was excluded from the latter briefing.

  • I would have posted this yesterday but I waited for someone besides Fox News to report it. 😉 We are a news outlet after all.
    What I’ve been saying for three years;
    “Vladimir Putin had ordered an influence campaign aimed at the 2016 election and designed to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral process.”
    It doesn’t matter to him who wins, just that the democratic process looks bad. If it looks like Hillary would win, he would be for Trump. Now if it looks like Trump will win, he will be for Biden…

    • Now with all this evidence, time to sanction the crap out of Putin, and stop Russia laying the blame on Ukraine.

    • The putler murder gang was caught off guard during Biden’s comeback in the presidential race after the South Carolina and Super Tuesday primaries. They were boosting Sanders’s campaign, viewing the self-declared democratic socialist (in reality a communist with a huge KGB file from his frequent visits during what probably to him was ‘the good old days’) as an easy foil to Trump. Sanders would have been absolutely a dream ticket for the tiny poisoner, being a treacherous turd who hates America almost as much as he does.
      But now, the Kremlin seems to have come to grips with the new reality. RT is now framing Biden’s victory as one of “party elites against rank-and-file voters.” It paints Biden as weak. “It is all but guaranteed that it would be Obama—not Biden—calling the shots from the Oval Office,” RT wrote.
      In stark contrast with Trump—who didn’t know the difference between the Baltic states and the Balkans, or that India bordered China—Biden is experienced in international relations, having spent decades as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, including time as its chairman. And he counts a host of world leaders and statesmen as good friends. However, in 2003, Biden described putler as ‘the most pro-western leader since Peter the Great’. Wanker!
      Some of the putlerite oligarchs have reasons to worry. They have children and grandchildren living and studying in the U.S. Biden’s threat to block their accounts and send them back home would not go down well.
      So, without a doubt the putlerstanis will definitely be going with Trump, now Sanders has gone.
