Ukraine agrees to joint border control with representatives of the uncontrolled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions as a condition for holding local elections in Donbas. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelensky during the Ukrainian lunch in Munich, Eurointegration reports.
The head of state reiterated that Ukraine came up with a proposal to conduct disengagement of forces on a new principle, which would free the Donbas sector from military equipment, but it is also important to have control over the border.
According to him, the possibility of joint control is being considered. “There will be Ukrainians, representatives of the occupied territories and the OSCE,” Zelensky explained.
However, the president did not specify a possible scenario for the selection of “representatives of the occupied territories.”
“We will not hold elections without control over the border,” Zelensky emphasized. He reiterated his intention to hold local elections in the occupied territories as early as this fall.
Zelensky announced his readiness for dialogue with the population that lives in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk and Lugansk regions, but not with the so-called ‘power’ in occupied territory of Donetsk and Luhansk region. He made the corresponding statement during his speech at the Munich Security Conference, which was broadcast by 112 Ukraine.
The Ukrainian leader noted that “complete silence” in the Donbas has not yet been ensured.
“In almost two months, more than 400 attacks on Ukrainian positions were recorded, as a result of which Ukrainian troops continue to die,” – Zelensky said.
The President emphasized that effective mechanisms are needed, according to which a ceasefire will occur “not in words, but in real life.”
