As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine and Russia during a round of trilateral talks, held in Berlin on December 19, with the mediation of the European Commission, reached an “agreement in principle” on gas transit.

“It was a very long day and very intensive negotiations,” EU’s Maros Sefcovic said in Berlin at a joint briefing with energy ministers of Ukraine and Russia, Oleksiy Orzhel and Alexander Novak, following the talks.

  1. Payment by Gazprom of $3 billion awarded to Ukraine’s Naftogaz according to a Stockholm arbitration ruling could be part of a package agreement on gas with Ukraine, a source from the Russian delegation told Interfax.

“Talks on the whole range of issues are due to continue in Minsk today,” the source said.

  2. I am convinced that the looming US sanctions on Nord Stream II have been an encouraging motivation for the Ruskies to sign a deal with Ukraine.

  3. Reading other reports, it seems Ukraine have to drop the $12 billion lawsuit against Gazprom. I’m cynical, and would not trust Muscovy one bit. Soon as Nord Stream is running, (unless the US stop it), Russian will stop any transit immediately, and the Krauts will do FA about it.
