Trump says discussed Russia election meddling with Lavrov – media

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Ukraine – and the importance of Ukraine’s sovereignty – was a “major” topic of his conversation with Lavrov.

U.S. President Donald Trump claims he discussed election meddling with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during their closed-door Oval Office meeting Tuesday. Lavrov decried allegations of election meddling in 2016 as baseless during a press conference with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier in the day.

“Just had a very good meeting with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and representatives of Russia. Discussed many items including Trade, Iran, North Korea, INF Treaty, Nuclear Arms Control, and Election Meddling. Look forward to continuing our dialogue in the near future!” the president tweeted, according to CBS News.

Trump and Lavrov met in the Oval Office for roughly an hour, but that meeting did not open to the press and Lavrov did not answer shouted questions. Only White House photographers were allowed into the Oval Office to avoid repeating a 2017 instance when photos of a meeting between Trump and Lavrov taken by a Russian photographer emerged, a senior administration official said.

Lavrov’s visit follows a major announcement in Ukraine-related impeachment proceedings: House Democrats unveiled two articles of impeachment Tuesday against Mr. Trump, charging him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The foreign minister’s visit also comes a day after the Justice Department’s watchdog released a report saying the FBI was justified in opening a probe into ties between Russia and Trump’s 2016 campaign for president.

During the Pompeo-Lavrov press conference Tuesday, Lavrov demanded more evidence Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential election, to which Pompeo said there was no mistake what happened in 2016. Pompeo emphasized that he made it clear to Lavrov the U.S. will not tolerate election meddling.

“I was clear — it’s unacceptable,” Pompeo said, adding the U.S. is ready to take action if necessary.

Lavrov said the U.S. allegations of Russian interference were baseless, and demanded more documents, to which one Washington Post reporter asked, “Why not just read the Mueller report, it’s very detailed when it comes to U.S. allegations related to meddling in the 2016 election?”

Pompeo pushed back against Lavrov’s demand for more documentation.

“We think we’ve shared plenty of facts to show what happened in the 2016 election with our Russian counterparts. We don’t think there’s any mistake about what really transpired there,” the secretary of state said.

  • So Trump invites this scumbag to spew out his lies in front of the world’s media. Nice one!

    • It sounded like nobody was buying it in the US. Poor Horseface was told to read the Mueller report, LMAO!

      • Yeah, I thought that was funny, and I have no doubt he has read it from top to bottom. According to other reports, he basically called Trump a liar, by saying they never talked about election interference, after Trump said they did.

    • The GOP are dividing into pro-Trumpkov/pro-putler camps and anti-putler and by definition anti-Trump camps. Ted Cruz, despite being abused by Trump in the election campaign (Trump accused his father as being complicit in the assassination of JFK) has come out in the former camp. He just stated on TV that Ukraine interfered in the election. Utter scum. The latter camp includes the reliable Rubio and Romney, who both rubbished Cruz’s absurd claims.

      • I’m still waiting to see all this evidence that proves Ukraine interfered in this election. If Giuliani thinks any statements from Shokin and Lutsenko will carry any weight, he’s sadly misguided, both are rotten to the core.

      • Yes. It’s going fine for the Democrats who are responsible for this mess. It is them who keep driving Trump supporters towards Russia. Cleverly planned and executed. We all know that the Democrats were eversince friendlier towards Moscow than GOP…

        • Trumpoids are being driven to Russia by Trumpkov, not the Dems, who are scum anyway. Dems did not make media filth like Carlson, Savage and Jones join the putler jackboot lickers club: they did it themselves, with the encouragement of Trump.
Dems did not make the Pauls into Russian agents; they did it themselves. As for Cruz, he’s joining a long line of people previously critical of the little shitweasel who mysteriously became fans. Money, kompromat or stupidity? Or all three?

          • No Americans are being driven to Putin despite any conspiracy theories. Americans haven’t even allowed him to visit since 2015.
The connection being made with Ukraine is not really with Ukraine as some people including Cruz allege. It was made between Yanukobytch and Manafort via the DNC operative Chalupa, and we all know who Yanukobytch was working for and it wasn’t Ukraine.
The US media need to be accurate and separate the disgraced traitor Yanukobytch from Ukraine.

            • They are though. Look at comments pages on US media too many to mention. Some professional kremtrolls yes, but mainly Joe sixpack who’s picked up on the masses of anti-Ukraine propaganda peddled by the usual suspects : Fox, Savage, Jones, the Pauls, Gateway Pundit, Drudge, Breitbart, et al, including military sites. Disqus has several: all crawling with putlerites. All this was started by Trump with his endless groveling to putler. Many Americans think putler is a Christian conservative working for peace, rather than the Godless fascist he really is.
The military are already talking about ways of stopping their guys from supporting the nazi shitweasel. Polls show that the numbers of Americans who see putler as an ally are actually increasing!

              • This started LONG before Trump was a candidate friend and I doubt very much that more than a few percent even know the names you mentioned. I’m relatively informed and I don’t know Savage, Jones, Gateway, Drudge or Breitbart. I just disagree with you about Fox, they’re about as middleoftheroad as you can get.

                • Fox’s star guy is Tucker Carlson, who has openly revealed that he is rooting for Russia against Ukraine. Another top Fox guy is Sean Hannity: another putinoid. Breitbart is owned by Steve Bannon. The Drudge Report is a pro-putler website, endorsed by Michael Savage. The Savage Nation: pro-Putler. Jones refers to Alex Jones-infowars.
These are big sites with huge traffic. What do they have in common? Pro-putler/pro-Trump.
Trump just hosted Lavrov in the WH. Never in history has such an implacable enemy of America been treated with such respect.
Take Michael Savage, a close friend and advisor to Trump, who frequently hosts Savage and his wife at Mar-A-Lago. Savage has been working as a Russian agent since before the invasion of Georgia. He is hugely popular. That is why America is full of Joe Sixpacks who love putler. Here is Savage trolling away for putler back in March 2014:
