The former Military Prosecutor of Ukraine Anatoly Matios published a document that lists the damage and lack of property on Ukrainian warships, which were captured by the Russian FSB and returned from the annexed Crimea a year later to Ochakov, Nikolaev region.
“It was military prosecutors who examined, recorded, and still continue to record everything that the “neighbor” did to our vessels. This is extremely necessary, hardly visible to anyone, but such an important procedural work for international judicial institutions,” he wrote.
According to the document, Russian marauders removed from the tugboat “Yany Kapu”, the armored boats “Nikopol” and “Berdyansk” not only all the radio equipment, but even the toilet bowls and stoves.
Thus, on “Nikopol” three Harris radio stations (one short-wave and two VHF), Motorola radio station, four ICOM radio stations, and the IRIDIUM space communication station are missing. Furuno radar station, an inflatable motor boat and recognition equipment, fire extinguishers, lights, emergency buoy, stove, toilet bowl and some more things are absent. Armament, except for a 30-mm gun mount, and all ammunition are absent as well.
On a small armored boat “Berdyansk” all the above mentioned items are missing as well. Moreover, the Russian shells pierced the armored pipe and the engine room. Left engine is damaged.
All the equipment in the wheelhouse is broken down in the tugboat “Yany Kapu”, fuel equipment is removed, no sockets and shades, a hole in the engine room, which is covered with a plaster. Harris, ICOM, MOTOROLA radio stations were removed.
Volunteer Oleksyi Mochanov shared photos from inside one of the ships on his Facebook page.
“About our boats. And their tormented inner world. Just a few pics of “Russian tuning” from interior design specialists from the spiritually fastened, unfriendly oil horde,” he wrote.
The Russian FSB, in turn, claims that “the boats and the tugboat were handed over to the Ukrainian side in good condition and with good plumbing,” TASS reports.
On November 25, 2018, Russia captured the Ukrainian boats “Berdyansk” and “Nikopol” near the Kerch Strait, as well as the tugboat “Yany Kapu”, which followed from Odessa to Mariupol. The Ukrainian side notified Russia of the riute of ships. However, the Russian military rammed a Ukrainian vessel, and then opened fire to kill.
As a result, 24 Ukrainian sailors were captured, while three of them were injured. Soon, all the sailors were transported from the illegally annexed Crimea to Moscow and held in Moscow pre-trial detention facilities until the Kremlin’s prisoners arrived in Ukraine on September 7th.
President Volodymyr Zelensky after inspecting the returned ships in Ochakovo said that Ukraine would demand from Russia to return “everything that was there.” He also said that Ukraine will conduct an investigation in this case, and promised that the ships will be repaired in three months.
