Ukraine’s Poroshenko: Steinmeier formula was created by Russian MFA head Lavrov
The fifth president of Ukraine stresses that so-called “Steinmeier agreement” was written by Russian MFA head Lavrov for president Putin
Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s ex-president, MP from European Solidarity faction said that the Steinmeier formula did not exist. He stated this at the Rendez-vous show on Channel 5 on September 21.
“No Steinmeier agreement exists in nature. There is no Steinmeier agreement. There is no Steinmeier formula supposedly agreed with someone,” Poroshenko said.
He said that there were proposals by German Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeier, which were as follows: after the security component is formed, after the impeccable organization of the elections is held, after the OSCE recognizes these elections free and democratic. Steinmeier suggested that the law on a special regime of local self-government be introduced not two weeks after the election when the election commissions will be obliged to calculate the election results, but on election day, while the OSCE will issue a report that the elections are free.
“Other positions mention that we are organizing an exclusively political process, but are not discussing security are all Putin’s inventions,” the fifth president of Ukraine emphasized.
“I want to tell you, this is the first time I’m telling you about the last meeting in Berlin with Putin, Merkel, the French president and your humble servant. When Putin said: we had Steinmeier’s formula written by Lavrov. I say: I’m sorry, there’s a letter from two ministers of Foreign Affairs of France and Germany, where they state that this is Steinmeier’s formula. Please take a look. He, Putin, takes this letter, reads and says: no, it’s not at all what Lavrov wrote on the Steinmeier formula for me. I say: sorry, but Lavrov will write nothing on it. Moreover, Steinmeier himself sits at this table and you can ask him, Mr. Putin. I won’t ask him, you re-advocated him, we will be based on our proposals – this is the style of Russia’s negotiation,” Poroshenko told. As we reported, the Steinmeier formula for the settlement of Donbas conflict does not provide for an amnesty for the militants of the self-proclaimed “DNR” and “LNR”. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Vadym Prystaiko stated this in an interview with Hromadske.
“There is not a single word about the amnesty,” he said.
The Foreign Minister believes that this document is “very widely interpreted”, despite repeated explanations.
